18th Century Chess Box Reproduction ($180)

A good chess board needs to be easy to play on, and pleasing to the eye.

Does this qualify? In our opinion, yes.

This reproduction, produced in handsome detail, is an exact copy of one made in the 1790s by master British wood carver John Calvert.

The inlaid board comes in a red-and-white color scheme popular back then, and – like the original – the chess pieces have individual slots inside the brass-trimmed mahogany box. And even though the chess pieces are faux ivory, they’re quite close to the originals.
